Is There a Relationship between Acoustic Vowel Space Size and Fundamental Frequency?

چکیده

Differences in vowel formants in bass and tenor singers, as well as the perception of vowels synthesised at different fundamental frequencies predict that in a group of male or female speakers exhibiting a sufficiently wide range of average fundamental frequencies, there will be a positive correlation between the speakers’ average f0 and the dimensions of their acoustic vowel spaces. This hypothesis is tested using a group of 61 female German speakers producing the corner vowels in same-vowel sequences designed to elicit maximally peripheral vowels with intervocalic junctural glottalisation, in turn facilitating formant estimation. Significant weak positive correlations are found between different measures of average speaker f0 and acoustic vowel space dimensions suggesting that there is a relationship between speaker f0 and acoustic vowel space size. However, the linear component of the relationship accounts for only 10 % of the variance suggesting a number of other factors are at work.

Production of English Lexical Stress by Persian EFL Learners

This study examines the phonetic properties of lexical stress in English produced by Persian speakers learning English as a foreign language. The four most reliable phonetic correlates of English lexical stress, namely fundamental frequency, duration, intensity, and vowel quality were measured across Persian speakers’ production of the stressed and unstressed syllables of five English disyllabi...

The Study of Vowel Space and Formant Structure in Mazani Language

Objective: One of the parameters showing the correct phonetic and phonological development is the correct and clear articulation of vowels is achieved by changing the shape of vocal cords through altering the height and position of the tongue and the movement of the lips and jaw. The tongue’s height and position are the basis of the production and difference of vowels. In other words, the raw s...

Vowel acoustic space development in children: a synthesis of acoustic and anatomic data.

PURPOSE This article integrates published acoustic data on the development of vowel production. Age specific data on formant frequencies are considered in the light of information on the development of the vocal tract (VT) to create an anatomic-acoustic description of the maturation of the vowel acoustic space for English. METHOD Literature searches identified 14 studies reporting data on vow...

بررسی ساختار سازه‌ای واکه‌های زبان فارسی در بزرگ‌سالان دوزبانه آذری فارسی

Objective: Vowels are the center of syllables while formant structures are one of the most important acoustic characteristics of speech sounds that help in their articulatory and perceptual aspects. Formants represent the shape and size of the vocal tract. There exist trivial differences between the vocal tracts of different people due to which the formant structures of a vowel in one person ar...
